Including Samuel

including samI showed this film to my students in a class on disability and education. It’s good for provoking discussion. That’s why I use it. It’s not an incredible documentary but it’s an important issue and deserves attention. I’ve seen it five times now.

You guys are good at chess.

It’s a cool story, but kind of an ugly documentary. Maybe it was something to do with streaming it off of iTunes (it was the 99 cent rental a few weeks back). Some of the scenes looked like they were shot on a very nice cell phone.

I recently listed to a discussion criticizing documentaries for being too conventional. Basically the argument is that people find incredible stories to tell and they think that is enough. I’m sympathetic to this argument. This story, like the story of Sixto Rodriguez, deserves a better film treatment.

The first 3 minutes of this film is basically just the trailer for it. I don’t know how I feel about that.

Gut reaction: 3/5

One film I liked more: Spellbound

One film I liked less: Waiting for Superman
