FilmStrip

I write reflections on movies I watch. I started doing this after my mother-in-law told me that her father used to keep a diary with reflections on all of the movies he watched. I think he probably only reviewed films he saw in theaters. Here I review all the movies I watch. That includes movies seen in theaters, rentals and streaming. Sometimes I post short things I watch on YouTube, but not often. I also occasionally write something about television shows I am watching.

I don’t really have a format. If I have a lot to say, I say a lot. If I don’t have much to say (or much time), I might only write a sentence or two. I give every film a gut reaction score out of five and I list “one film I liked more” and “one film I liked less”. I assign the gut reaction score immediately after viewing the film. It’s only a first response. Sometimes I might edit the post later to say how I feel about the film after some time has passed. The “one film” convention is just something I thought up when I first started doing this. I try to think of films that have some relation to the film in question (genre, themes, actors, etc), but sometimes this is hard. In particular, when the film is great or incredibly bad it is more difficult.

I like discussing movies with people after seeing them. This is enjoyable to me because we can discuss all aspects of the film. When I write about movies, I don’t think in terms of spoilers. If you don’t want to find out that Bruce Willis was dead all along or that Rosebud is a sled, you probably don’t want to read this blog.
